Chengannur town is situated in Alappuzha District of Kerala state. It is the closest Railway transit point towards Sabarimala.Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Railways,Sri. E. Ahammed, has declared Chengannur railway station the ‘Gateway of Sabarimala' during his visit to the place in 2009. The distance from Chengannur Railway Station to Pamba is only 93 kilo meters.
Chengannur has its own spiritual importance. Mahadevar temple, Panchapandava temple and Pandalam palace are within a short distance from Chengannur town. Thanthries who perform thanthrik rites in Sabarimala belong to Thazhamon Madom at Chengannur. Famous Thattavila family who built the sculpture of present Ayyappa idol at Sabarimala also belongs to Chengannur. In addition to being the Gateway of Sabarimala, these cultural and spiritual heritage makes Chengannur a very important transit point for Sabarimala Pilgrims.
